Immersive VR Simulation based Military Training

Calian has partnered with the Canadian Army Simulation Centre (CASC) to provide advanced training solutions that meet evolving military needs. Established as the premier center for simulation-based training within the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), CASC has been at the forefront of developing and delivering complex, large-scale training exercises since the 1990s. Based in Kingston, CASC supports distributed training operations across various locations, including Gagetown, Valcartier, Petawawa, and Edmonton, and extends its expertise to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Government of Canada partners. CASC also leads joint and multinational exercises with NATO allies, offering high-fidelity simulation activities that span all levels of collective training.

The Challenge

One of the main challenges in large-scale military training is managing the inherent complexity of such exercises. Organizing extensive live training operations demands substantial resources, including fuel, ammunition, and other logistics, making it both costly and resource-intensive. To address these challenges, there is a growing global trend towards simulation-based training. This approach allows for the creation of immersive, multi-domain training experiences without the high costs associated with live training, thus building readiness effectively and efficiently.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, CASC faced significant obstacles in modernizing training methods. The shift from manual, paper-based processes to advanced digital technologies was essential for improving training effectiveness while controlling expenses. Additionally, CASC needed to preserve the value of collective training by integrating various units and functions into a cohesive digital environment, combining constructive, virtual, and live simulation methods to create realistic and effective training scenarios.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, Calian developed a comprehensive simulation-based training solution that integrates constructive, virtual, and live simulation technologies. This innovative approach offers a versatile and immersive synthetic training environment for a wide range of military scenarios. By employing a system-agnostic strategy, Calian connects diverse simulation tools to create a unified training experience that meets specific objectives for high-readiness units.

This digital transformation involved replacing traditional paper charts and manual processes with a sophisticated digital toolset. Calian collaborated closely with CASC leadership to design and implement tools that support the development and execution of large-scale training exercises. The resulting solution allowed for the creation of a shared, immersive environment where training events and injects could be developed, synchronized, and delivered across multiple locations.

Training Results and Data

The use of digital technologies in training not only facilitated the design and delivery of complex exercises but also provided valuable insights through data collection and analysis. Calian’s tools capture real-time training metrics that feed into comprehensive after-action reviews (AARs). These reviews analyze exercise outcomes, identify lessons learned, and enhance future performance and readiness.
