Virtual Reality (VR) has become a prominent tool in training and education due to its ability to offer immersive, interactive simulations that replicate real-world scenarios. This technology allows learners to practice in a controlled, risk-free environment, which enhances their ability to retain and apply knowledge. VR training is particularly advantageous for industries where traditional training methods are costly and dangerous, as it provides a cost-effective and scalable solution.

Since 2005, the client has been a leader in providing OSHA-compliant Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) training and certifications. Recognizing the need to innovate their training processes, they sought to integrate VR technology to create a realistic forklift training experience within a simulated warehouse setting. The challenge was to develop a solution that would balance safety, cost-effectiveness, and usability for a diverse age range of learners, from Gen Z to baby boomers.

A key challenge faced was addressing motion sickness in VR applications while also managing user access, hardware integration, and tracking training outcomes. To overcome these challenges, a combined VR and web-based solution was proposed. The VR component included a detailed 3D warehouse and a sit-down forklift simulation created using Unity software. This simulation, designed for the HTC VIVE Pro 2 headset, featured an intuitive interface and was paired with a custom-built forklift controller and Logitech steering wheel.

The solution offered a variety of training modules with differing levels of difficulty, adhering to OSHA guidelines to provide a safe and engaging training experience. The web portal supported administrative functions, including user account management, license distribution, and module assignment. It also allowed for the monitoring of training sessions and management of user access.

The VR training solution has significantly impacted PIT training by delivering a more immersive and effective learning experience. It has reduced the risk of accidents, improved the efficiency of PIT operators, and lowered costs by decreasing the reliance on physical training facilities and equipment. Overall, VR has proven to be a valuable tool for enhancing industrial training programs.
